A Mention (or tag) is how you grab someone’s attention in Google Classroom or Google Docs. The mention is added to a comment. They get an email letting them know you mentioned them. The person can reply to the comment.  This article shows how to mention others in Google Classroom.

How to tag or mention someone

Type + or @ followed by the person’s email address. The email will auto-populate as you type. Select the person you want to mention and press enter to add them to the comment.

You can tag any student or teacher that is part of the class.

Mention in Google Classroom

Where can you mention someone in Google Classroom

Classroom Stream

Mentions work in a comment on an announcement of the Classroom Stream. You can not mention someone in the body of an announcement. Teachers can direct an announcement to a specific class or student while creating a post.

At the time of this writing, mentions in Classroom only work by typing their email. Typing their name does not work.

Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides

Comments in G suite files can include mentions. You can mention someone by typing their email address or name. (Classroom only allows you to mention by their email address.)

You may use comments to assign tasks or action items to people. This only works on G suite files. To do this, mention someone while creating a comment. Then click the “Assign to” check box. The assigned person will be responsible for marking the task as complete. You may reassign the task to another person by adding another comment.

Notification Settings

People will get an email when they are mentioned in a comment. The email includes a link that takes them directly to the comment. Teachers and students can control how often they receive notifications. From Google Classroom, click the menu icon in the upper-right corner. Then, click the settings gear icon.
